Tom Cruise is getting a divorce from Katie Holmes, and while the Maverick will be riding solo, at least he’ll be doing it in style. Tom Cruise drove the BMW i8 in the movie Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. He also got to drive the concept car to the Russian screening, though we imagine that involved more waiting for the car to be unloaded and idling it up to the red carpet and less high speed chases.
The BMW i8 is being readied for production right now and will have a combination of four different power sources for a total of 349-hp. The BMW i8 will have an electric drive system out of the BMW i3 with a 129-hp electric motor powering the front wheels and a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo diesel engine with 220-hp powering the rear wheels. BMW says the hybrid combo is good for a 0-60 time of 4.6 seconds. The i8 should be able to drive on electric power only for up to 35 miles. Total range will be around 430 miles thanks to the efficient diesel engine and regenerative braking.
Tom Cruise endeared himself to car guys when he took to Top Gear’s track with their reasonably priced car and turned out the fastest lap a non F1 driver had ever produced. He even added some action movie flare to the lap with an unintentional trip onto two wheels during a particularly sharp turn.
