Toyota is planning a 40-mpg hybrid version of the 2013 Toyota Avalon. The 2013 Avalon Hybrid will get the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and hybrid drivetrain as the 2013 Lexus ES300h. Toyota says that the 200-hp hybrid system in the 2013 Toyota Avalon will give the large car a 40-mpg rating.
Toyota has already announced that the 2013 Lexus ES300h will get 40-mpg city and 39-mpg highway. Since the 2012 ES350 weighs 3,605 lbs and the 2012 Toyota Avalon weighs 3,572 lbs, it stands to reason that the 2013 Toyota Avalon Hybrid will match that.
Like the ES300h, the 2013 Avalon Hybrid will have three user selectable driving modes. Pure EV driving can be selected for up to a mile at speeds of up to 25-mph. Eco will be the standard driving mode. Sport mode will give drivers better throttle response and gives the steering a tighter feel.
The 2013 Avalon Hybrid won’t advertise its eco cred very obviously. A few of Toyota’ hybrid badges and a blue tint to the Toyota logo and front lights are the only visual changes, according to Autoblog. Buyers looking to advertise their green purchase will be a little disappointed in the Avalon’s looks.
