Lexus will stop sales of the HS 250h due to slow sales. The Lexus HS 250h, which is unrelated to any other Lexus or Toyota car sold in the U.S., will leave the market just in time for the ES 300h hybrid to go on sale in August.
The ES 300h shares its platform with the ES (obviously) and the Toyota Camry, meaning that even though the ES hybrid will almost definitely be more expensive than the HS was, it will probably be less expensive comparative to other similarly sized cars than the HS 250h was. The HS 250h is close to the Corolla in terms of interior dimensions, while the ES is clearly equivalent to the Camry. Buyers apparently balked at the prospect of paying the HS 250h’s $37,030 starting price for a small hybrid. The five-door CT 200h, with its $29,120 starting price sold 6,510 units compared to the just 591 HS 250hs that were sold.
Left Lane News claims that the ES 300h, which will have a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, will get better gas mileage than the HS 250h, which is powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder.
Expect any left over HS250h models (they aren’t selling fast so there should be a few) to come with enticing incentives in the coming months.
