The Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ are obvious competitors for the Mazda Miata, which is a great entry level sports car and has had the convertible sports car market to its self for a while. The Mustang V6 convertible can make a claim to filling the niche, but it’s designed for sorority girls and everybody knows it. Plus it starts at $27,200, a long way from the Miata’s $23,470 and the FR-S’ $24,930. Now the FR-S and BRZ are aiming directly at the Miata with convertible models on the way.
Car & Driver claims the a convertible version the of Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ twins (and the Toyota GT 86 that is sold elsewhere in the world, ensuring the continuation of the JDM Badge market for at least a couple more years) were designed from the beginning to be convertible- ready, meaning it wouldn’t require the expensive and time consuming engineering that sometimes accompanies a convertible version of a hard top car.
The convertible Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ models will help separate the newest sports cars on the block from the competition like the Miata and Hyundai Genesis, neither of which have the option of hard or soft top. Combine that with the huge aftermarket support that will probably accompany the FR-S and BRZ and you have a recipe for a modern day version of the Nissan 240SX.
