The 2013 Ford Explorer will get an Ecoboost engine, joining the list of Ford vehicles available with the high-powered fuel efficient engines. The Explorer Sport will get the same 3.5-liter, 350-hp twin-turbocharged engine found in the Ford Taurus SHO. In addition to the obvious draw of the horsepower in the Ecoboost engine, the Explorer Sport will get an estimated 16-mpg city and 22-mpg highway, which is 2-mpg city and 3-mpg highway better than the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.7-liter HEMI.
The Explorer Sport will be a new trim line for the 2013 model year, and unlike the Explorer Sport that was offered in the 1990s and early 2000s, it won’t be a two door version of the SUV. Not a big deal, 350-hp is much sportier than losing doors anyway.
The 2013 Ford Explorer Sport will use a paddle shift six-speed automatic transmission, a lower 3.16 to 1 final drive ratio, chassis stiffening, a faster ratio steering, larger brakes and a special terrain management system with settings for sand, snow, mud and hill descent. Towing capacity in the 2013 Ford Explorer Sport will be 5,000 lbs.
