The 2012 Ford Focus Electric will go on sale soon in California, New York and New Jersey, and when it does it will come with a 105 MPGe rating. The Focus Electric will also have a 76-mile range. The Focus EV will beat the Nissan Leaf in both range and MPGe, though not by much in either. The 2012 Ford Focus Electric will be available throughout the country starting in September.
Ford is hoping the Focus Electric will knock the Nissan Leaf out of the EV competition. Ford points out that the Focus EV will have a fast charger available that can recharge the Focus Electric in about half the time the Leaf takes. The Focus does beat the Leaf in both fuel economy and range, with a range of 76 miles to the Leaf’s 73 and a 105-MPGe rating (110-MPGe city, 99-MPGe city) to the Leaf’s 99-MPGe rating.
The Focus Electric’s slightly better range (3 miles is pretty inconsequential given the variety of factors that affect range) and better MPGe rating also come with a higher price tag. The Ford EV will cost $39,200, while the Leaf costs just $35,200, according to Autoblog.
