The Dodge Avenger will probably be discontinued in the next few years so that Chrysler can focus on the more luxurious and better selling 200. The Avenger and 200 share a platform, so the feeling at Chrysler seems to be that offering two cars in the same category with little differentiation between them. Both cars start at $18,995 for the 2012 model year, the only major difference is that the Chrysler 200 is better looking and is available in convertible form.
The 2012 Dodge Avenger (shown here) will be discontinued soon.
Reid Bigland, head of the Dodge brand, told Automotive News that the Chrysler group will probably only sell one midsized car in the future.
“Chrysler Group will likely consolidate around one midsize car in the future… If we have two cars that are very similar, it does split dealer focus. Consolidating around one very competitive entry certainly has its advantages.”
Chrysler has long been derided for selling multiple versions of the same vehicle with only superficial differences between the models. The loss of the Dodge Avenger will be one of the final steps in removing all of Chrysler’s redundant models.
