Volkswagen has announced that a hybrid version of the compact VW Jetta will be built. Volkswagen has long been the posterchild for diesel in the diesel vs hybrid debate, but now the Jetta will get another fuel sipping option: a hybrid engine with 45-mpg. Volkswagen says that the 2013 Jetta Hybrid will be the fastest small hybrid with a 0-60 time of nine seconds and that it will travel at up to 44-mph in pure electric mode.
Power will come from a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine with 150-hp and 184 lb-ft of torque combined with a 20kW, 27-hp electric motor. A seven-speed dual clutch DSG transmission will be used. When coasting, the engine will turn off and the transmission will disengage, allowing the Jetta to maximize fuel economy down hill and gain more power from regenerative braking.
The 2013 Jetta Hybrid only weighs 221 lbs more than a standard gas-powered Jetta, a pretty small increase considering the additional battery and electric motor that it gets. The 2013 Hybrid Jetta will weigh just 3,310 lbs.
The 2013 VW Jetta Hybrid will be available at the end of 2012.
