Audi has pulled the tarp off of the 2012 S6, the high performance version of Audi’s normally sedate A6 midsize sedan. The S6 will add a slew of performance upgrades to the A6 platform while eschewing the garish body styling that sometimes comes with the high-performance versions of luxury cars from BMW’s M division and Mercedes-Benz’s AMG group. The S6 will fit in perfectly at the country club or any work gathering, so no worries about the CEO thinking less of you after spotting you drive up in a monster with scoops galore and a giant wing.
The 2012 Audi S6 will be powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine with 420-hp and 405 lb-ft of torque. Astute Audi fans may notice that that engine is much smaller than the 5.2-liter V10 engine that was available in the last S6, but don’t worry, the S6’s turbo V8 doesn’t suffer from turbo lag, the full 405 lb-ft of torque is available at 1,400 rpm, according to MotorAuthority. The 2012 S6 isn’t a huge performance leap up from the last generation, but the new S6 is certainly frugal. The 2012 Audi S6 has a gas mileage rating of 24-mpg in the European combined cycle. Let’s review that: the midsize 2012 Audi S6, with 420-hp, gets better gas mileage than my 2004 VW R32 (a compact car) with a 240-hp engine. That’s basically the definition of having your cake and eating it too.
