For those drivers who are looking for something new this year, a promising hybrid from an unusual source represents how today’s car market is expanding to fit the needs of the twenty-first century move toward more fuel-efficient vehicles. This particular car, known as the Fisker Karma, is an upscale new ride with a turbocharged 2 liter in-line four engine complemented by two AC permanent-magnet synchronous motors and a one speed direct drive transmission. This swift ride can go from 0 to 60 in under 6 seconds and features an elegant exterior as well as a distinctive body with its own neatly flared contours from front to back.
The Fisker Karma comes from Henrik Fisker, a Danish automotive engineer whose past credits include work on BMW and Aston Martin models. With the Karma, Fisker brings to mind some of the classic design of American cars of the 60s, but also blends in the very modern engine technology of cars like the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf.
Experts point out that since the Fisker Karma can run on gas when the battery runs low, this is a long-range car that rivals other hybrid designs for sustaining power during long trips. The first 50 miles, though, are gas free, which means drivers using this vehicle for around-town transportation should be able to avoid burning fossil fuels.
Relatively few drivers have heard of this obscure car, but as the Karma has been going up against offerings of other new brands like Tesla, it’s getting more attention. Now, an October 3 press release from the Los Angeles Auto Show reveals that the Fisker Karma is about to start getting delivered to customers in the U.S. With a $100,000 price tag, the Karma won’t be in the price range of many buyers, but rumors are that Fisker plans to come out with another lower-priced car, called the Nina, in future model years, making the brand’s hybrid design more accessible to a wider range of customers.
Fans of new car technology will be interested to see the Fisker Karma compete with Tesla and CODA Automotive, as well as new hybrids from big brands, in 2012. Always look for the best factory-direct offers as makers reveal their game plans for tempting customers over to one side or another.
