So you’re looking for a top-of-the-line luxury car that spares no expense in the name of luxury, but still has impressive fuel economy ratings? In years past, you had to make a choice between the size, and therefore the comfort, of the car and fuel economy. With the Lexus LS 600H and Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid, that choice has been rendered unnecessary. Both the Lexus LS 600H and the Mercedes-Benz S400H are rated at over 20-MPG combined. Heroic numbers when associated with vehicles with an average weight of nearly 2.5 tons.
The 2011 Lexus LS 600H costs $112,250 and is rated at 19-MPG city and 23-MPG highway. The LS 600H is powered by a 5.0-liter V8 engine combined with a hybrid electric system that produces a total of 438-horsepower. That’s enough grunt to move the 5,203-pound LS 600H from 0-60 mph in just 5.5 seconds, 1.7 seconds faster than the lighter Benz. Part of the Lexus’ acceleration advantage comes with the standard all-wheel drive system. The Mercedes is available only in rear-wheel drive.
The 2011 Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid starts at $91,850, a full $20,000 less than the Lexus. The S400 Hybrid is not a powerhouse like the LS 600H, it’s 3.5-liter V6 engine is rated at 295-horsepower when combined with the electric motor. The Mercedes S400 Hybrid is much lighter than the Lexus at 4,474 pounds, which helps it to fuel economy ratings of 19-MPG city and 25-MPG highway.
Both the Lexus LS 600H and the Mercedes-Benz S400H come with heated and cooled front and rear seats, premium stereo equipment, built in navigation systems with information and entertainment options, and high end leather seating.
