BMW has released details on the 2012 BMW M5. The F10 Series M5 will be powered by a 560-horsepower twin-turbocharged V8 engine using a seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission.
The newest generation of the M5, which is the fifth high performance version of the 5-Series that BMW has built, is breaking with tradition in a way by using fewer cylinders than its predecessor. Each previous M5 generation has either matched or increased the number of cylinders under the hood, but the F10 M5 will replace the E60 M5‘s V10 engine with a twin-turbo V8. The F10 M5’s V8 560-hp engine is not a downgrade from the last generation’s, horsepower is up by 60 and torque is up by 118 lb-ft. The 2012 M5 is also the first M5 to feature forced induction.
Despite the switch from natural aspiration to turbocharging, 2012 BMW M5 is no great departure from tradition. The F10 M5 is still an unassuming four-door sedan without any garish wings or bumpers that betray its performance. Your mother would walk right by this car in the parking lot and your grandmother would have no second thoughts about riding in it to the Red Lobster.
BMW claims that the new 2012 M5 will go 0-62 mph in just 4.4 seconds and 0-124 mph in 13 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph. BMW also claims that the 2012 M5 will get 28 miles to the gallon. If you were wondering about the reason behind BMW’s switch to turbocharging for the F10 M5, that’s it.
