There’s been a lot of talk – a lot – about the new 2012 Chevrolet Sonic, but now, with this car currently under production in Michigan, Chevrolet staffers are talking about exactly what they feel will lead this vehicle to victory in today’s “tiny car wars” where various automakers compete to provide excellence in fuel economy.
The Chevrolet Sonic promises to be an attractive sub-compact. Chevrolet bills it as the only sub-compact car made in America, but aside from its authentically domestic production environment, there are some other solid reasons to consider buying one of these cars as they come onto the American market. Not least of these is the Sonic’s ability to provide 40 miles per gallon on highway with its Ecotec 1.4 liter turbo engine. Staffers are also saying this car will be able to go 0 to 60 in just over 8 seconds.
GM and Chevrolet are thinking that the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic will provide some real competition to other small cars like the 2012 Ford Fiesta and 2012 Honda Fit. But how does Sonic’s Ecotec block provide the fuel savings Americans are craving this year? In a September 15 press release, those involved in production of the new Sonic detail some of the engineering built into its high-performance engine.
The hollow frame block of the Sonic’s 1.4 L Ecotec Is enhanced with piston-cooling oil jets and an integrated oil cooler, as well as a variable flow oil pump. A modern thermostat will regulate engine temperatures, and dual overhead cam shafts attached to chain-driven cams and roller-finger camshaft followers will help this efficient block purr under the hood. Strategic designs for the exhaust manifold and other parts will further increase the “power for fuel” ratio of the Sonic. Staffers are saying there will also be a larger 1.8 liter block option that will get around 25 miles per gallon in city and 35 miles per gallon on highway – not quite the 40 mpg mark, but not bad for an upsized motor. With a suggested retail price of around $15,000, this car will be attractive to many drivers who want a lower transaction cost and lower prices at the fuel pump. Keep checking on availability and offers from General Motors on this exciting new opportunity as it hits local dealer’s lots.
