Auto experts with an eye toward the future are getting more information on Chrysler’s plan to build a new Jeep Grand Wagoneer in 2013. The Wagoneer, last sold in 1991, represents a large luxury vehicle that Jeep apparently wants to bring back, though it’s not entirely clear yet if this model is meant to be more of a nod to the past or a response to specific current market demands. Jeep execs say the move is based on the idea of offering the public an “upper-scale” ride with seven passenger seating and towing capacity, maybe for hauling boats or small trailers, while looking good in a driveway. Since those reporting on the new 2013 model are still using 1990s-era photos with traditional wood-grain paneling, it can be hard to envision just what this new Jeep Grand Wagoneer will look like on the lot.
The new Wagoneer is not the only big project in the works for 2013, according to various sources. There are big rumors of a small Jeep SUV for the model year as well. As folks buzz about what’s likely to emerge from this play for a more fuel-efficient Jeep, some are calling the new model a compact, and some are calling it a subcompact. Some are comparing the possible product of Jeep’s labor to the Mini Countryman, a stylish small jeep-style vehicle combining rugged good looks with a smaller frame. Jeep staffers are saying the company is likely to borrow from the Wrangler for styling the new smaller crossover.
The plan to offer a smaller Jeep fits into a much greater market trend. Customers are looking for vehicles with lower costs of ownership, and specifically, those that require less filling up at the pump. Look for new options from Chrysler’s Jeep division for future model years, and be sure to keep an eye on incentives and financing offers that can help you get a stylish new Jeep at the lowest price possible.
