Ford has announced that the 2012 Ford Explorer will be available with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder Ecoboost turbocharged and direct injected engine. The four-cylinder Explorer will have an EPA gas mileage rating of 28-mpg highway, which Ford claims is 20 percent (5-mpg) more than the Honda Pilot and Jeep Grand Cherokee and 12 Percent (3-mpg) more than the Toyota Highlander.
The 2012 Ford Explorer Ecoboost four-cylinder engine will make 240 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque, less power but more torque than the standard V6 engine. This will be the first application of the new 2.0-liter Ecoboost four-cylinder, but Ford says Ecoboost engines will be available in 90 percent of all Ford vehicles by 2013, so expect to see this engine in most of the cars and small SUVs.
Ford claims that more than half of the 2011 Explorer‘s early buyers cited fuel efficiency as a major factor in their decision to buy a V6 Explorer, which gets 25-mpg on the highway and 17-mpg in the city. With SUV buyers especially aware of gas prices and behemoths like the Nissan Armada getting ratings of 12-mpg city and 18-mpg highway, the Explorer’s unheard of 28-mpg rating should make it very popular.
