With gas prices cresting $4 per gallon, small cars with gas mileage ratings over 35-mpg sold well in April. Small cars like the 2011 Chevy Cruze, 2011 Hyundai Elantra and 2011 Ford Focus, which all get very high gas mileage, lead the way in a month where sales rose 18 percent compared to last April. 1.16 million cars were sold in April.
Unlike the last time gas prices jumped suddenly in 2008, American car brands are prepared with new, attractive, fuel efficient products like the 2011 Chevy Cruze and 2011 Ford Fiesta, with more small cars like the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic and 2012 Ford Focus on the way.
Hyundai also benefited in April from small car sales. The 2011 Hyundai Elantra, which was redesigned for this model year and is rated at over 40-mpg, lead Hyundai to a 40% increase over last April.
Even consumers who did not buy small cars made fuel efficient choices in April, according to the Associated Press. Half of all Ford Mustang sales for April were of the 31-mpg V6 model. The 2011 GMC Terrain crossover SUV, which is based on a car’s platform rather than a truck’s and gets better fuel economy than a traditional SUV, sold very well in April.
