Dodge has announced a new Ram Cargo Van based on the Dodge Grand Caravan. The Ram C/V will have more room than competing small work vans like the Ford Transit Connect. Dodge currently sells a Grand Caravan C/V, but will be marketing the new work van under the Ram Truck brand and will add the option of body panels in lieu of the rear and side glass panes.
Not just a Grand Caravan with the seats pulled out, the Dodge Ram C/V has been specifically designed for commercial use with a heavy-duty load leveling suspension, an aluminum reinforced cargo floor and heavy-duty radiator and transmission coolers. The Dodge Ram C/V cargo van will have 144.4 cubic feet of interior cargo space, a class-leading 1,800 pound carrying capacity, the ability to hold four 4×8 sheets of building material, a 3,600 pound towing capacity and a 25 miles per gallon highway rating.
The Ram C/V will use Chrysler’s newest Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 engine with 283-horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. That’s a lot more power than is available on the Ford Transit Connect, which has a 136-hp four-cylinder engine. With that much of a power advantage, it will be interesting to see if commercial customers will choose the commercial-only Ford Transit over the Ram C/V’s minivan-turned-work-van look.
