Volkswagen has revealed the new VW Cabrio, a convertible version of the Golf small car. The Cabrio was available alongside the Golf for more than 20 years before it was discontinued in 2002 when the Beetle convertible replaced it. The Golf convertible will be shown at the Geneva Motor Show next week and will go on sale in Europe in May. VW has not announced whether the new VW Cabrio will go on sale in America.
The Cabrio is easily recognizable as a Golf, and while it’s a good looking car, it won’t have the same cute factor as the Beetle convertible, so it seems unlikely that VW would chose the Cabrio to compete with the MINI Cooper convertible rather than a convertible version of the soon-to-be redesigned Beetle. The Cabrio version of the new VW Golf will lose the old Cabrio’s signature roll bar hoop that made it look like a picnic basket.
According to AutoWeek, the new VW Cabrio will use a fully automatic cloth roof, which should help VW keep the price low enough to appeal to young buyers when compared to the automatic hard-top Eos. The automatic roof will open in less than 10 seconds and will be able to open at speeds up to 19 miles per hour, which is perfect if you’re planning a shot-for-shot remake of the Ice Ice Baby video (any doubts about the coolness of an automatic convertible top are relieved at 1:30).
