A Chevy Cruze diesel model may be available in the 2013 model year. The 2013 Chevy Cruze diesel would likely give Chevy’s small car gas mileage that would rival hybrids and appeal to buyers looking for an inexpensive alternative to the high cost of buying a gas-electric hybrid car.
The Chevy Cruze diesel is already available in Australia and other parts of the world, and that engine would most likely be used in the U.S. version, According to GM Inside News. GM Inside News cites a manager at GM’s Lordstown plant and claims that the diesel engine will be an option on the 2013 Chevy Cruze. GM’s spokesman Tom Read denied the report and told the Youngstown Vindicator that no official announcement had been made to managers at the plant.
Chevy will need a high mileage version of the Cruze to compete with the new 2012 Ford Focus, which will get over 40 miles per gallon, according to Ford. The 2011 Chevy Cruze is rated at 36-mpg highway.
The 2011 Volkswagen Jetta diesel is rated at 42-mpg highway, so the Cruze would need to beat that in order to impress buyers who have the choice of a more convenient gasoline-powered 2012 Focus. The Chevy Cruze diesel in Australia is rated at 36-mpg combined, but differences in emissions requirements and fuel economy ratings will give the car a different mpg rating if it is released in the United States.
