Mitsubishi has announced that it will stop producing the Eclipse, Galant and Endeavor before 2014. The Eclipse, Galant and Endeavor are the only vehicles currently built by Mitsubishi in America. After the current crop of American-built models are canceled, Mitsubishi will use its Illinois manufacturing plant to build new vehicles that will use the platform currently found on the smaller Lancer and Outlander.
Mitsubishi says that discontinuing the Eclipse, Galant and Endeavor by 2014 will help the company gain market share, which has fallen to 3 percent, according to Autoweek. Mitsubishi has not yet announced what vehicles will be built in Illinois after the current American-made lineup is canceled.
The new Mitsubishi vehicles built in the United States will be split between those intended for North America and overseas markets. Mitsubishi says that building vehicles intended for Latin America and the Middle East in the United States is less expensive than building them in Japan.
Mitsubishi announced that the MieV electric vehicle currently built in Japan will go on sale in America by the end of this year as part of the company’s focus on smaller vehicles. Mitsubishi has also reached out to Nissan and Suzuki for help adding small cars to its lineup, but is not planning to sell any rebadged models.
Mitsubishi is also considering a joint venture with Nissan to build a one-ton pickup truck. Autoweek says that the pickup would be designed for emerging markets, so don’t expect that truck to be available in America.
