Chrysler has announced that a hybrid version of the newly redesigned 300 is in the works. The 2012 Chrysler 300 Hybrid will be Chrysler’s only gas-electric hybrid model when it goes on sale, though Chrysler has plans for more. An all-new minivan will be introduced in 2013 and will be available with Chrysler’s hybrid system. A Dodge Charger Hybrid will also probably be available sometime after the Chrysler 300 Hybrid, according to The Detroit News.
The new 2012 Chrysler 300 will be available with a hybrid drivetrain.
Chrysler has not had a hybrid model available since the 2008 Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango hybrids were cut from the lineup.
Instead of focusing on super high mileage hybrids like the Honda Insight or Toyota Prius, Chrysler is launching its new hybrid system on large cars and minivans, where gas mileage is typically much lower, so improvements are more important.
“The technology makes the biggest difference in vehicles with the worst mileage,” Aaron Bragman of IHS Automotive says.
The 2012 Chrysler 300 Hybrid’s gas mileage has not yet been announced, but Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne says that more information on the hybrid 300 will be coming soon.
Despite launching the hybrid technology on large vehicles, Chrysler is not ignoring the small car market. The Dodge Caliber‘s replacement, which be a traditional sedan rather than the Caliber’s hatchback body style, will use a nine-speed automatic transmission to save fuel.
