Volkswagen has revealed the new 2012 VW Passat. The new Passat will be bigger and more comfortable than the outgoing model, and will also be the first Passat built in America. VW says that in addition to a completely new exterior and interior, the new 2012 Passat will get a clean diesel engine with an expected 43-mpg fuel economy rating.
The new Passat has been redesigned inside and out. The exterior restyling follows the styling cues of the new 2011 VW Jetta, which has been popular.
The 2012 VW Passat will be the biggest ever, and Volkswagen has made good use of that extra size. The 2012 Passat will have the most leg room in a mid-size car.
Pricing will not be officially announced until Spring, but Volkswagen says that the 2012 VW Passat will start around $20,000.
The 2012 VW Passat will be available with three different engines. The Passat’s 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine will be borrowed from the Jetta and Golf. The borrowed 2.5-liter engine will make 170-hp and will allow the Passat to be sold for a low price. The frugal choice on the 2012 Passat will be the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo diesel engine. VW says that the Passat diesel will make 140-hp and 236 lb-ft of torque along with its expected 43-mpg gas mileage. The 2012 Passat will also be available with a 3.6-liter VR6 engine that makes 280-hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The VR6-powered Passat will get 28-mpg.
