General Motors has announced a recall on 185,000 small pickup trucks because the child safety seat anchor does not comply with federal safety standards. The recall affects the 2004-2011 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, as well as the 2006 Isuzu i-280 and i-350 and the 2007-2008 Isuzu i-290 and i-370.
The recall affects regular and extended cab GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado (shown here) pickups that do not have a rear seat and are equipped with a 60/40 folding front bench seat. According to Kicking Tires, the child seat anchor system on the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon is positioned so that it is not properly secure. GM and the NHTSA both discourage owners from placing a child in the front seat of a pickup, but since there is no back seat in these models, changes need to be made in order to make the child seat safer.
GM dealers are prepared to make changes to the child seat anchor system in order to bring it in line with safety standards. GM will contact owners of affected trucks to inform them of the recall. Since the recall affects older vehicles, if your truck was bought used and you think it may be affected by the recall, you should contact a local dealer to determine if the repair is necessary.
