The Chevrolet Volt has been given a 93 miles per gallon rating by the Environmental Protection Agency. The 93-mpg rating is the equivalency rating for the Volt when operating on just electric power. The Volt also received a second rating of 37-mpg when operating on just the gasoline engine, which occurs after the electric motor’s 35 mile range has been used up.
Gas mileage ratings are generally just for comparison purposes, as every driver will get different results depending on where and how they drive. With the Chevy Volt, that is even more true. General Motors is advertising a 60-mpg “composite” gas mileage rating, according to Autoblog Green. The Chevy Volt’s gas mileage will depend heavily on how far it is driven and if the gasoline engine needs to be used.
The Nissan Leaf received a 99-mpg equivalent rating, but does not have a gasoline engine like the Chevy Volt’s to extend the car’s range after the batteries have died. The Volt’s 93-mpg electric rating along with a similar range using only battery power puts it on the same level as the Leaf as an electric car. The Volt has a total range of 379 miles with a full tank of gasoline, so buyers who are looking to go electric without the need for a second vehicle for longer trips will appreciate the Volt’s versatility.
