Chrysler announced today that the 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 will get an upgrade in the form of a larger, more powerful, more frugal engine. The new 6.4-liter Hemi V8 will make 470-horsepower, which is 45 more than the 2010 Challenger SRT8’s 6.1-liter Hemi.
In addition to the huge horsepower bump, the new 6.4-liter Hemi-powered 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 will get better gas mileage than the 2010 model. Chrysler says that the 2011 Challenger SRT8 will get 15-20% better mileage than the 2010 model’s 13-mpg city and 19-mpg highway ratings. That means the 2011 Challenger SRT8 still won’t be a gas sipper by any definition of the term, but anything helps, especially in a car like the Challenger that you’ll want to take any excuse to drive.
The 2011 Challenger SRT8 392’s new 470- hp 6.4-liter Hemi engine puts it well above the 2011 Camaro SS‘ 426-hp and the Mustang GT‘s 412-hp. In fairness, the SRT8’s $43,000 price tag is a long shot above the Camaro’s $30,945 and the Mustang’s $29,645. Even with the 470-hp Hemi, the SRT8 still isn’t the most powerful pony car available in 2011. The Mustang GT500 with 540-hp takes that crown.
The 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 will go on sale just after Thanksgiving with 1,492 inaugural editions, according to Autoblog.
