BMW may discontinue the M3 sedan and replace its four-door sports car with a wagon.
According to Motor Authority, the newest issue of Roundel, the official BMW Car Club of America magazine includes a report that when BMW redesigns the 3-Series, the four-door M3 will no longer be an option. In its place will be the Gran Turismo wagon body style.
The M3 Gran Turismo will have a hatchback body style similar to the 535 Gran Turismo shown above that is currently available in the United States. BMW already builds a 3-Series Gran Turismo for Europe, and the plan to import the wagon M3 may mean that the less expensive 3-Series models will be available with the hatchback body style too.
The 2011 BMW M3 sedan (shown here) starts at $55,400 and includes a 414-hp V8 engine, a suspension designed for the race track and a 0-60 time of 4.8 seconds.
BMW’s decision to drop the functional yet stylish four-door M3 for a functional and not-so-stylish wagon is a strange one. Wagons are an unpopular body style in the United States, so much so that Volvo recently announced it was moving away from wagons in favor of SUVs. It’s strange that while Volvo is in the process of moving its model lineup away from wagons, BMW would move toward them.
