The war between the Dodge Challenger, Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro usually focuses on the high-horsepower V8 versions of the pony cars. Most people are concerned with 0-60 times and horsepower numbers when looking to rank today’s muscle cars. The fight over which company builds the best less expensive, less powerful and less fun V6 model isn’t exactly titillating. Typically, the V6 models of these cars have been designed for people who think a spoiler makes a sports car.
That’s not really true anymore. Chrysler has just announced that the Dodge Challenger, along with its frumpier sisters, the Charger and Chrysler 300, will get a new 305-hp V6 engine for the 2011 model year. The extra 50-hp over the 2010 model means that the V6 Challenger can finally compete with the Camaro and Mustang base models, both of which pack more than 300-horsepower. The V6 option isn’t just for people who don’t care about cars anymore.
Chrysler’s new 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine has already debuted in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and will also be used in the Dodge Avenger, Durango and Journey, as well as the Chrysler 200 and Town & Country, according to Autoblog. The new V6 will make 268 lb-ft of torque. Gas mileage ratings have not yet been released.
