Chevrolet has released details and images of its new Caprice police cruiser. The Caprice police car will be based on the recently canceled Pontiac G8, and will share the G8’s large sedan body style and 6.0-liter V8 engine. The Caprice will be specially outfitted to the needs of police departments.
The new Chevy Caprice police car will have 355-hp and 384-lb-ft of torque, pushing the rear wheel drive sedan to 60 mph in under six seconds. That should be enough power to keep up with most of the criminals out there. Chevy says that police departments asked for a V8-powered rear-wheel drive sedan to use as a cruiser, so it has been built. The Caprice will be the only rear-wheel drive V8 sedan available from GM when it goes on sale. Chevy has not announced plans to make the Caprice available to civilians.
The interior of the new Caprice police cruiser will be customized for police use, with a special front seat designed so that officers can sit comfortably with a gun belt on. The Caprice will also feature airbags at the front and back of the prisoner partition to protect officers and whoever happens to be in the back seat, according to Autoweek.
The 2011 Chevy Caprice police car will go on sale in April 2011, and ordering will start in January.
