Audi has revealed the new 2011 A7 four-door coupe. The A7 was revealed in Munich yesterday and will fit into the mold established by the Mercedes-Benz CLS for stylish four-door models that use design elements from coupes. Audi will begin sales of the A7 in early 2011, according to AutoWeek.
The 2011 Audi A7 is built on the same platform as the A6 mid-size sedan, but has the sloping roof and hatch-back rear opening of a coupe. The rear hatch-back configuration will set the Audi A7 apart from the Mercedes-Benz CLS it is styled after. The Audi will also be easier to load with large items thanks to the hatch, which could make it more practical and appeal to buyers who could use an SUV or a wagon, but don’t like the bulky look.
Audi is also planning an S7 performance version of the A7, but that model will not be available in the U.S. until 2012. Audi has not released any details on the S7, but AutoWeek says that it may feature a twin-turbo 4.2-liter V8 with about 480-horsepower.
Audi is hoping that the new stylish four-door coupe will help push North American sales by stealing some buyers away from the Mercedes CLS and the Jaguar XF. Using a high-end, four-door coupe to do that isn’t surprising. What is surprising is that Audi’s sister company, Volkswagen, beat it to the four-door coupe craze by several years with the CC.
