Subaru is recalling 809 Legacy and Outback models from the 2010 and 2011 model years for a defect in the transmission that could cause the gears to break while the car is driving. Apparently, an essential lubrication hole for the transmission was left out due to a programming error. Subaru recently recalled 29,443 2010 Legacy and Outback models for another transmission problem that could result in a crash, according to Inside Line.
Subaru says that cars missing the necessary lubrication hole will develop a groaning sound over time as the transmission gears begin to be stressed by the lack of lubrication. If the transmission is not fixed, the gears will eventually break.
Subaru has issued a stop sale on all affected models still on dealer lots and will be contacting owners of affected vehicles to schedule a service appointment so that a Subaru dealer can drill the missing lubrication hole and replace any internal parts that have been damaged.
Subaru will also replace the main shaft and third through sixth gears of any car affected by the recall with more than 6,250 miles. If you have a 2010 Subaru Legacy or Outback with close to 6,250 miles that is affected by the recall, it might be worth it to drive around to get over the mileage threshold for the free rebuild.
