When the next generation Chevrolet Corvette C7 goes on sale, it will likely be one of the first cars to use GM’s all new 5.5-liter V8 engine. According to Motor Trend, the engine will make about 440-hp in the Corvette C7.
The newest Chevy small block will have an aluminum block and headers and direct injection. Motor Trend’s source says that the V8 for the new C7 Corvette will use an overhead valve layout to keep production costs and engine dimensions low. Those small dimensions and low production costs are most likely a key part of GM’s plans for the new engine. The company typically does not build unique engines for its flagship sports car. Instead, the engine will probably be used as the basis for a whole slew of others.
The new Corvette C7’s V8 engine will most likely be used in the Camaro next, but it may need a horsepower boost to compete with the new 480-hp Hemi in the Dodge Challenger. GM will likely use the new engine as the basis for several others, just like it did with the LS series of engines, which are currently used in GM’s pickup trucks and were previously available on the front-wheel drive Chevy Impala SS, in addition to the Corvette and Camaro sports cars where it was first found.
