BMW may be planning to build a hybrid supercar. The car, which may be called the M8, will likely be similar to the Vision EfficientDynamics concept car, pictured below. The major difference between the concept car and the planned production car will likely be a lack of plug-in capability.
BMW hasn’t officially announced any plans for the M8 yet, but the company is planning hybrid versions of the 3-series and 5-series luxury cars.
The BMW M8 hybrid supercar will be powered by the M5’s 5.0-liter V10 engine combined with a pair of electric motors, according to German magazine Autozeitung, via Autoblog. The electric motors will probably be set up with one in the front and one of the rear of the M8, and will add about 150-horsepower to the M5-sourced V10 engine for a total power output of at least 600-hp.
The BMW M8 would be worth buying just to make jokes with the name. If you have a yacht with a garage (let’s face it, if you’re buying a supercar, you have a yacht already, so you’ll just have to upgrade to one with a garage), you can invite people on board and while you’re giving them the tour you can say “And this is my first mate,” as you open the door to the garage. Wit like that is the only thing that separates the wealthy from the nouveau-riche.
