The 2010 Lexus HS 250h will be recalled soon to fix a problem with the hybrid car leaking an excessive amount of fuel after a high-speed rear-end collision. During government crash tests, it was decided that the Lexus hybrid leaks more gas than is acceptable after being struck from behind.
During the Lexus HS 250h’s annual safety tests, it was discovered that a 50-mph rear-end collision will cause the luxury hybrid to leak more gas than is acceptable by the NHTSA’s standards.
Lexus says that during internal testing, no such issues arose, so the company does not have a solution ready yet.
“Lexus is currently working to identify the reason for the different test results and the cause of this noncompliance,” a statement from Lexus said.
Lexus will be recalling approximately 17,000 HS 250h models once it figures out an acceptable solution to the fuel leakage problem. All Lexus dealers have been instructed to stop selling the HS 250h until a solution is decided on.
Toyota Spokesman Brian Lyons told Autoweek that the company has recalled 10.6 million vehicles for a variety of reasons since November 2009. The Lexus HS 250h was recalled along with the Toyota Prius to fix a suspected computer software issue that lead to unintended acceleration.
