The Volkswagen Routan is the company’s first real attempt to break into the minivan market in America. Unfortunately for VW, the Routan has not been a hot seller and may not be worth keeping. According to The Wall Street Journal via Autoblog, Volkswagen may discontinue the Routan minivan in the next few years.
Before the Routan, the closest thing to a minivan Volkswagen had sold was the iconic VW Bus, which unfortunately has not been on the market for a while. Unlike the VW Bus, the Routan isn’t unique, doesn’t have a huge cult following and won’t be a symbol of our generation. In fact, the Routan is basically a Chrysler Town and Country with different body panels, a different interior and a suspension that has been reworked by the Germans.
Volkswagen hasn’t put anywhere near as much care into the Routan as it does in other models, like the new 2011 VW Jetta.
Volkswagen hasn’t given up on the Routan yet, so if you’re in the market for a minivan and prefer VW’s interior appointments to Chrysler’s, you still have plenty of time to shop for a Routan. The VW Routan is on sale during June with a 0% financing incentive for 60 months.
