Toyota has announced plans to complete construction on a manufacturing plant in Blue Springs, Miss. Toyota stopped work on the plant in 2008 when new car sales dropped. Now Toyota plans to open the plant after all in order to keep up with demand for the compact Toyota Corolla.
The plant in Blue Springs, Miss. will employ 2,000 workers and produce 150,000 Corollas each year, according to The Detroit News. The plant is expected to open in the fall of 2011.
Toyota initially planned to build the Highlander SUV and then the Prius hybrid at the Mississippi plant, before stopping construction in 2008. The building was almost complete when construction stopped. Toyota says that basically all that is needed to begin production is the actual car-making equipment.
Toyota was rocked in the beginning of 2010 by massive recalls, but sales have buoyed thanks to 0% financing incentives and pledges to fix any issues that arise. Toyota’s 0% financing incentives have been so popular that the company needs to open more manufacturing plants in order to keep up with demand for the Corolla small car.
The Toyota Corolla, pictured above, has long been a sales leader for Toyota, and the availability of 0% financing has lured a lot of buyers onto Toyota lots that probably would have stayed away otherwise.
