Infiniti may be planning a performance line for its cars and SUVs similar to the Mercedes-Benz AMG group or BMW M Series of cars. Nissan North America, parent company of Infiniti, has filed for trademark protection on the names “IPL” and “Infiniti Performance Line”, according to Autoweek.
Most luxury brands have a performance division that puts out everything from sportier versions of the standard cars to full-blown race cars that only share basic components with other models. Mercedes-Benz AMG and BMW M cars are the most popular examples, but Lexus recently added the F line of cars to participate in the luxury performance segment.
Infiniti doesn’t have as large a lineup as some competing brands, but does have experience building sporty cars. The Infiniti G37, which evolved from the G35, is one of the most attractive sporty coupes available in the luxury market.
Infiniti could also draw on Nissan’s GT-R, which is possibly the best bang-for-the-buck performance car available today. Don’t expect an Infiniti version of the GT-R, which would weaken the appeal of Nissan’s halo car. Infiniti may use components of the GT-R, like its 485-hp twin turbocharged V6 engine or the legendary ATTESSA all-wheel drive system, to soup up some of its existing models for the IPL versions.
