Mercedes-Benz is aiming to grow sales over the next few years by adding more models to the C-Class lineup. Mercedes has already announced that the C-Class will add a coupe in 2011. The coupe and sedan will be joined by a convertible in 2013, according to Automotive News.
Mercedes-Benz CEO Ernst Lieb says that the company’s best chance for growth is to focus on smaller cars. Mercedes will focus on adding variety to the C-Class, which is currently only available in sedan body style. In comparison, the BMW 3-Series can be bought in sedan, coupe, convertible and wagon body styles.
“Everybody wants to be Mercedes-Benz,” Lieb said. “They are after us in the S- and E-class segment. With C-Class, we’re sitting with a four-door sedan and not doing anything else. Now we will go into segments where (competitors) are strong.”
Mercedes-Benz has not announced a C-Class wagon yet, but if the company is successful with the coupe and convertible C-Class, it might decide to build a 5-door.
Mercedes-Benz will also bring a small B-Class to America in 2012 to combat the BMW 1-Series and Audi A3. The Mercedes B-Class will be available as a coupe, sedan and crossover SUV. This will be the first Mercedes to be available as both a car and an SUV. Usually the company gives similarly-sized cars and SUVs completely different names.
