The Lamborghini Murcielago is being recalled for a defect in the gas tank that could cause a fire. The gas tanks on 2007 and 2008 model year Lamborghini Murcielagos can become detached from the supercar and can cause a fire, according to Autoblog.
The welds holding the fuel pump support inside the fuel tank are the source of the recall. If the welds fail, the gas tank could become detached. Lamborghini Murcielago roadsters and coupes are covered under the recall.
Only 428 Lamborghini Murcielagos are being recalled, but the recall is still serious for a company that expects people to shell out $350,000 for a car. If customers think that Lamborghini’s quality isn’t up to snuff, they won’t hesitate to cross the street to the Ferrari or Porsche dealership.
Automakers have been quick to pull the recall trigger over the past few months, since Toyota’s debacle with unintended acceleration. That doesn’t mean that the problem isn’t a serious one. It is possible, however, that before the Toyota unintended acceleration recall and ensuing bad press for avoiding said recall, Lamborghini would have just issued a service bulletin and instructed dealerships to fix the fuel tanks of any Murcielagos whose owners complained about smelling gasoline.
