The 2004 Chevy Corvette could be recalled due to a leaky gas tank. The NHTSA has opened an investigation into the ’04 Chevrolet Corvette to see if the fuel tank is defective and needs to be replaced under a recall.
The NHTSA has received 30 complaints from Corvette owners stating gasoline or fuel vapors were leaking from their cars. In 12 of those cases, one of the Corvtte’s two gas tanks was found to be the source of the leak and was replaced. The NHTSA has not yet decided if Chevrolet needs to recall Corvette models with the potentially faulty fuel tank. The investigation covers 33,000 Corvette models.
Autoweek spoke to Alan Adler, a spokesman for General Motors, who told them that no accidents or injuries have been reported because of the problem. Adler said that GM will comply with the NHTSA’s investigation, which could result in a recall if the Corvette fuel tank is determined to be defective.
An investigation is only the first step in the recall process and if the NHTSA decides that the 2004 Chevy Corvette’s gas tank is not defective, no recall will occur and the investigation will be closed. If a recall is needed, Chevrolet will contact owners with details on how to have their Corvette gas tank replaced.
