The 2011 BMW X3 will go on sale in America soon and BMW wants buyers to custom order their luxury crossovers instead of just picking one that’s on the dealer lot. Custom ordering lets buyers pick the options and color combinations they want, rather than settling for whatever color is available on the lot or paying for options they don’t want.
The 2011 BMW X3 will replace the current model next year, but hasn’t been officially revealed yet. Car and Driver expects the new X3 to be larger than the current model to put more distance between the midsize SUV and the compact BMW X1 that will be launched soon.
According to Autoweek, half of all BMWs sold in Europe are built-to-order for customers. Custom ordered cars are beneficial for carmakers because the cars do not sit on dealer lots and don’t need to be discounted. BMW dealers don’t have to spend as much on inventory and make more profit on built-to-order cars and SUVs.
BMW is asking all of its U.S. dealers to promote built-to-order cars and SUVs to customers. The 2011 BMW X3 will be built in Spartanburg, S.C. Building the X3 in America will allow BMW to deliver custom ordered models to customers in as few as two weeks.
