Buick has announced that it will be adding a compact car and a small crossover to its lineup. The company will also stop the use of trim levels and instead will only use option packages. The loss of trim levels mimics what other luxury brands, like BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi have done, according to the Detroit News.
Buick has not released any details about the new compact car or small crossover, which will be available in the next few years. Expect both to use the chassis of another GM model in order to save money and keep costs down.
Buick is dedicated to constantly updating its products in order to stay competitive, something American car companies have been criticized for not doing enough in the past. A Buick spokesperson said that by 2013, the oldest vehicle in Buick’s lineup will be the Regal.
In the next few months, the new midsize Buick Regal will go on sale. The Regal will slot below the larger Buick LaCrosse and is designed to compete with luxury cars like the Mercedes-Benz C-Class or BMW 3-Series. The Regal will start several thousand dollars below the German models. With a base MSRP of $26,245, the Regal will cost about $7,000 less than a Mercedes C-Class.
