The Fisker car company has received a $528.7 million loan from the U.S. Department of Energy. The American car company will use the loan to produce the Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid luxury car and a smaller family car called the NINA, according to Motor Authority.
The first 2010 Fisker Karma hybrid cars will be built in Finland and shipped to the U.S., but the company plans to move production to America in 2012. Fisker expects to begin delivering 2010 Karma models to buyers in the third quarter of 2010.
Vice President Joe Biden supported the loan, saying that it will help “America’s auto industry reclaim its top position in the global market.”
The Fisker Karma and NINA hybrid cars will be built in the former General Motors Boxwood Plant in Biden’s home state of Delaware starting in 2012. Once the Fisker Plant in Delaware is fully operational, the company plans to build 115,000 vehicles every year there.
