Alfa Romeo will start selling cars and SUVs in America again. The Italian car brand plans to return to the U.S. market for the 2012 model year with two vehicles. The mid-sized Alfa Romeo Giulia and an unnamed compact crossover SUV will be the first models sold, according to Autoblog.
Parent company Fiat has not announced plans for who exactly will be selling Alfa Romeo cars in the U.S., but Autoblog expects that Chrysler dealerships would be happy to have an exciting new brand to add to their lineups. It was previously believed that Alfa Romeos brought to America would be rebadged as Chryslers.
For the 2013 model year, Alfa Romeo will sell a five-door MiTo wagon and a new version of the iconic Alfa Romeo Spider. Alfa will add a compact hatchback called the Giullietta and build a larger SUV based on the Jeep Liberty for 2014.
Alfa Romeo builds beautiful cars, but has a reputation for not building them well. Enough time has passed since the brand closed its operations in the United States that buyers should be willing to take a chance on the cars. The are two major variables that stand in the way of Alfa’s success in America. The first is that the focus on SUVs could dilute the brand’s image of sleek, sexy sports cars and turn buyers off. The second is that the brand’s sleek, sexy sports car, the Spider, hasn’t yet been officially revealed, so nobody knows if it will be able to compete with small sports cars like the BMW Z4.
