Saab has announced the pricing for its new generation of the mid-size luxury 9-5. The new 9-5 will be available in July as a 2010 model and at first will only be available in the upscale Aero trim. The 2010 Saab 9-5 Aero price will be $49,990, according to Autoblog.
The 2010 Saab 9-5 is the first new car the company has released since leaving GM’s corporate umbrella. The 9-5 was designed by GM, so that return to Swedish weirdness that some people are expecting now that the brand is independent will have to wait until the next model.
The 2010 Saab 9-5 Aero is powered by a turbocharged 2.8-liter V6 engine that makes 300-hp. All Aero models will come with all-wheel drive.
Saab says that the 2010 9-5 Aero will be joined in the 2011 model year with a base model, which will come with the company’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The base model 2011 Saab 9-5 will cost less than $40,000. That leaves a pretty large gulf between the base and Aero models in terms of pricing, so expect Saab to also offer a mid-level trim to fill the gap.
The Saab 9-5 competes in the mid-level luxury segment against the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, Infiniti M and Cadillac CTS. Saab’s one huge advantage in that market is that the base four-cylinder model will undercut all of the competition by several thousand dollars.
