Ford became the number-one selling brand in Europe this month. According to The Detroit Free Press, via Autoblog, Ford had an 11.5 percent sales gain in March. Ford boosted its market share in Europe to 10.4 percent, which is only 0.4 percent higher than the company had one year ago. The new Ford Fiesta, which goes on sale in America this year, was the best selling car in Ford’s European lineup.
The new Ford Fiesta small car drove the company’s sales boom. Ford sold 192,400 cars in Europe during March, and 68,000 of those were Fiestas. The Fiesta was the second best-selling car in Europe for 2009, behind the Volkswagen Golf.
The Ford Fiesta that has been so popular since it launched in late 2008 in Europe will go on sale in the United States this summer. Ford’s U.S. sales were up 37 percent in the first quarter of 2010. When the Fiesta finally hits Ford’s home market, the company should see even bigger gains. The Fiesta will be smaller and less expensive than the 2010 Ford Focus.
