Ford has confirmed that it will offer a turbocharged EcoBoost V6 as the base engine in the F-150 pickup truck. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 will be available in two-wheel-drive F-150 models only, and will be on sale this year, according to Autoweek. F-150 4×4 models will only be available with a V8 engine.
EcoBoost is the name Ford has given to its line of fuel-efficient turbocharged engines. Ford says that the EcoBoost engines give the power of a larger engine without sacrificing gas mileage. In this case, that means that the turbo V6 will be equivalent to a V8 in terms of power, with better fuel economy.
The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 makes 365-hp in the Taurus SHO where it is currently found. Expect the F-150 to have slightly less power and the engine to be tuned for more low-end grunt, since the F-150 V6 will be expected to carry much heavier loads than the Taurus SHO.
The Ecoboost engine technology will also find its way into the next generation Ford Explorer. The next Ford Explorer, which is reportedly based on the Ford Explorer America concept, will be a car-based crossover. The new Explorer will get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine.
