Infiniti plans to add a four-cylinder engine option to its G car. The engine will come from Mercedes-Benz as part of the alliance between the companies. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said the addition of a Mercedes-Benz sourced four-cylinder will improve fuel economy, according to Autoweek. Expect more moves like this in the coming years as carmakers scramble to meet the stringent fuel economy requirements that go into effect in 2016.
Ghosn did not say which Mercedes-Benz four-cylinder engine would be used in the Infiniti G car. Mercedes-Benz doesn’t currently import any four-cylinder-powered cars to the United States, but has said that it may. The shared four-cylinder engine may also be sold in the Mercedes-Benz C-Class to save money. The C-Class will be built in Alabama starting in 2014.
Nothing has been said about the future of the G37, which has a 3.7-liter V6 engine that makes 328-hp in G37 sedans and 330-hp in G37 coupes. The sporty G37 is popular, so don’t expect it to be completely replaced by the four-cylinder model.
