When Land Rover replaces the Range Rover in 2012 with a new generation, the luxury SUV could get 30 mpg, according to Autocar. Land Rover is focusing on making the next Range Rover more luxurious and economical than the current model and the competition.
To maximize gas mileage, the 2012 Land Rover Range Rover will use an all-aluminum monocoque chassis, and will reportedly weight 992 lbs less than the current model. That’s a really impressive amount of weight savings, and Land Rover says its engineers have spent a lot of time ensuring that the lighter chassis will be able to handle the abuse of off-roading.
That weight savings, combined with a new diesel V8 engine, will reportedly give the 2012 Range Rover gas mileage in the 30 mpg range. If the diesel engine passes the strict U.S. emissions tests, the new Range Rover will be a very attractive option for luxury SUV buyers.
The 2012 Range Rover Sport will also benefit from the lightweight construction, which will make it even sportier. The next generation Range Rover Sport will also be available with seven seats.
