Nissan will be recalling 4,038 Pathfinder and Xterra models from the 2010 model year due to a problem with the fasteners that secure the front passenger airbag and a bracket in the steering shaft. The fasteners were not torqued to the correct specifications, which means that in the event of a crash, the passenger side airbag could deploy incorrectly, according to Autoblog.
Airbags deploy with a lot of force. An improperly installed airbag could inflate at an angle that injures the person it is designed to protect, similar to a child in the front seat of a car. The NHTSA says that there is a risk of serious injury due to the improperly installed airbag fasteners. Nissan will contact owners with instructions for how to proceed with the recall, which will officially begin in April.
Nissan Pathfinder and Xterra models built between February 22 and March 13 are affected by the recall. If you’re unsure about your SUV’s exact build date, you can call Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.
Nissan dealers will inspect all fasteners on all Xterra and Pathfinder models affected by the recall, and will properly install any that are loose or missing.
