Chrysler announced Monday it is working to develop an electric-powered version of the Fiat 500. The Fiat 500EV will not only showcase the engineering abilities of Chrysler post-bankruptcy, but also the ability of the new company to work with Fiat, something that was lacking in the Mercedes-Benz relationship.
“The alliance with Fiat presented new opportunities to merge Chrysler Group engineering knowledge with new platforms and the Fiat 500EV is an outstanding example of our efforts,” said Scott Kunselman, senior vice president of engineering at Chrysler, in a statement. “The Fiat 500 is a small, lightweight platform perfect for integrating electric-vehicle technology.”
Pricing has not been set, but Chrysler says that the Fiat 500EV will be competitive with other vehicles in the segment, which would put it in the high $30,000 range. Also not yet set is a date for the electric only Fiat 500EV. Chrysler says that it is exploring ways to promote the electric vehicle charging infrastructure necessary for EVs to be practical. The statement teases future partnerships that will work toward that goal. The gasoline-powered 500 will go on sale later this year.
